Neonatal hepatitis syndrome and alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency: an epidemiological study in south-east England.

چکیده
A prospective epidemiological study of the Neonatal Hepatitis Syndrome in S.E. England showed Alpha-1Antitrypsin Deficiency (Pi ZZ) to be present in seven out offifty-two patients. Data are considered from these seven patients, and from a further six cases from outside this area. The nature of acute illness, pathological changes on early liver biopsy, and short-term prognosis show considerable variability, but in general the hepatitis is more severe in patients with Alpha-1-A.T. deficiency than in those in whom no aetiological factor was found.

Hepatitis syndrome in infancy--an epidemiological survey with 10 year follow up.
Fifty four infants with hepatobiliary disease and conjugated hyperbilirubinaemia of more than two weeks' duration were identified in a defined area of south east England in a prospective study between January 1971 and December 1973. The overall incidence was one case per 2500 live births. The cases were regularly reviewed and all survivors except one were assessed at age 10 years. Nine of 11 wi...

ALPHA-I-antitrypsin deficiency associated with n chronic obstructive airway disease was recognized in 1963 by Laurell and Ericksson. I In 1969, . Sharp' described the first cases of alpha-l-antitrypsin-deficiency disease in children with cirrhosis. Since then, this ·inborn error has been recognized as one of the more common factors in cirrhosis of infancy and childhood,] including "neonatal hep...

This report draws attention to the alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency in newborns presented as a cholestatic syndrome. Its sub-diagnosis constitutes a major constraint for recognition and appropriate treatment. Good outcomes occur in approximately 50% of patients. It is associated in most cases, to extra and intra-hepatic involvement and the absence of clinical signs that indicate its diagnosis. Th...
متن کاملAlpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency in patients with chronic hepatitis.
BACKGROUND/AIMS Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency causes accumulation of mutant alpha-1 antitrypsin molecules in hepatocytes, and is attributed to severe liver injury even in heterozygous state. However, there is a question as to whether alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is only a cause of liver injury or has a worsening effect on the underlying liver disease. We aimed to determine the role of alpha-...

To investigate the possible role of cell mediated cytotoxicity in the pathogenesis or perpetuation of liver damage associated with alpha 1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency, peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) from 13 children with PiZZ phenotype who had had liver disease in infancy were incubated with autologous hepatocytes in a microcytotoxicity assay. There was a clear trend for cytotoxicity to in...
